The Pink Jeep Incident

pink jeepIn my last newsletter, I covered the subject of flow. I want to continue with that subject, but from a different angle.

When it comes to my work, I have been in a state of flow for many years because I love what I do. In the past, the only time I left that state was when the bills came due and there was not enough money to cover everything, when it came time to gather up and sort records for the year end accounting, or when I ran into unexpected snags that were simply mystifying to me.

In the case of paying bills, it was my anxiety around not making as much money as I wanted that threw me out of flow, not the work itself. In the case of getting records together for the year end, or sending out social media tweets and twits and Facebook pages, it was the nature of the work. In the case of unexpected snags, it was my expectations that threw me out of flow.

I understood the resistance to the work and even the effect of attitude shifts, but could never figure out how I could work and produce so much and thoroughly enjoy what I was doing and still not have financial abundance. I never imagined that my expectations could be contributing to my less than desirable outcomes.

It was not until I understood how very clear our receiver (goals and intent) had to be that I finally got it. The realization that a goal had to be absolutely clear and precise - "telephone number clear" - a term coined by a friend after reading the telephone number example in The Law of Abundance was the first "aha" for me, but not the one that led me to think about the impact of expectations or intent.

This was driven home for me by an event that actually occurred to my son, Randall, in what I have dubbed "The Pink Jeep Incident." Randall was driving to pick up his children when a pink Jeep pulled up alongside him. In noticing the Jeep, he thought it was a foolish choice of color and, as soon as he had that thought, he suddenly noticed that the critical nature of it had caused his energy level to shift down.

Once he realized the effect the pink jeep had, he began to purposefully notice other things, like street signs. He recognized that when the object was something he perceived as useful or helpful, such as the street signs, his energy remained steady and unruffled. When he noticed something that he didn't like or didn't see as useful, his energy dropped to the degree that he had a negative opinion of the object.

He called me immediately to convey what he had discovered. It was a real revelation for him, and for me. We both realized the degree to which anything that gets our attention becomes a receiver. I was already aware that what gets our attention is a receiver and had even written about it in the book, but I had not realized the extent to which that was true.

Randall's experience led me to realize how easily our energy can be affected and how important it is to guard our thoughts, judgments and opinions, even with the little things. It isn't just the big things, like doing the wrong work that drains off our energy. The little things like critical thoughts do too. When I applied the lessons from the pink jeep incident to my experience with money, I realized that there were a lot of subtle energy drainers in my life in that arena. I discovered a number of well hidden judgments around the nature of money in general, and about my ability or right to amass large amounts of it.

I began to notice the effects of thoughts and opinions that I had no idea were energy drainers. One of these you will find in my book and referred to in much of my writing. It's the Henry David Thoreau quote that set me on my journey. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." What I didn't realize was that "lives of quiet desperation" was my focus. I quickly changed and created a new image to counter that one and changed my focus to "joyous celebration!"

Much like Randall's energy shift when he began noticing street signs, I began noticing my energy shifting around money. I discovered that, even though I had already done a lot of work around money, I had not looked deeply or closely enough to discover all the receivers that kept throwing me out of flow in the financial arena.

In the poll we conducted during the August 18th webinar, The Science of Creating Abundance, we asked what area people found least abundant. Eighty-five percent said money. It appears most of us have some work to do around money--deeper, more subtle work than most people imagine.

If you still have some work to do in this area, I suggest you start with your beliefs. Make it a point to notice how you feel about people who are very rich; about people who are very poor; about your ability and right to have all the money you want--not at some time in the distant future, but right now. Find the beliefs that underlie the feelings and notice your energy levels as you engage them.

Then realize you have the power to change your thoughts--to write a new story around money or anything else that is not serving you well. Once you decide what you want the new story to be, start focusing on that. Make your new story as grand and marvelous as you want. You see, your subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined. It just gives or removes energy in response to your thoughts and the feelings your thoughts generate.

Watch what you allow to engage you. I had no idea that the Thoreau quote was directing my energies down the wrong path until I examined it closer. What thoughts and ideas do you entertain? Are they helpful or harmful? You can know by noticing how you respond energetically.

The pink Jeep was neither good nor bad in reality. I imagine the person driving it thought it was good and was energized by it. Randall thought it was bad and was drained by it. The same is true of your money stories, your relationship stories, and all your other life stories. Take the time to explore them. Make them what you want them to be so your energy flows where you intend. It is when our energy is flowing freely in the direction that is right for us that we experience that lovely state appropriately called flow.

Live Abundantly!

Sherry
